평온을 비는 기도(Serenity Prayer)는 신학자이자 작가인 하인홀트 니버 (Karl Paul Reinhold Niebuhr)가 1934년 경 설교에 쓰기 위해 쓴 기문이라고 합니다. 원래는 제목이 없었지만 나중에 변형을 이어가며 지금의 제목이 되었다고 해요.
니버의 책(The Essential Reinhold Niebuhr: Selected Essays and Address)에 수록된 기도문은 다음과 같습니다.

God, give us grace to accept with serenity the things that cannot be changed,
courage to change the things that should be changed,
and the wisdom to distinguish the one from the other.
평온을 비는 기도-라인홀트 니버
하나님, 제 힘으로 바꿀 수 없는 것들을 평온하게 받아들일 수 있는 은총을 주소서
바뀌어야 하는 것을 바꿀 수 있는 용기를 주소서
그리고 그 둘을 분별할 수 있는 지혜를 주소서
추후 아래의 확장된 버전으로 잘 알려지게 되는데 수정한 저자는 알려지지 않았고, 니버는 일관되게 위의 원래의 버전만을 사용하였다고 합니다.
God grant me the serenity
To accept the things I cannot change;
Courage to change the things I can;
And wisdom to know the difference.
Living one day at a time;
Enjoying one moment at a time;
Accpeting hardships as the pathway to peace;
Taking, as He did, this sinful world
As it is, not as I would have it;
Trusting that He will make all things right
If I surrender to His Will;
So that I may be reasonaly happy in this life
And Supremely happy with Him
Forever and ever in the next

하나님,
바꿀 수 없는 것을 받아들일 수 평온과
바꿀 수 있는 것을 바꿀 수 있는 용기
그리고 이 둘을 분별할 수 있는 지혜를 주소서
하루를 온전히 살아갈 수 있고
순간을 충만히 즐길 수 있고
고난을 평화에 이르는 길로 받아들이게 하소서
주가 그랬듯이, 죄로 가득 찬 이 세상을
제 뜻대로가 아니라, 있는 그대로 끌어안게 하소서
주의 뜻대로 살아간다면
주가 올바른 길로 인도하실 것을 믿습니다.
그리하여 제가 이 세상에서 합당한 행복을 누릴 수 있게 하시고
다음 세상에서는 주와 함께 영원토록
최상의 행복을 누리게 하소서.
